First portrait : Dalila
Dalila is in charge of the allotment gardens in Aubervilliers. She is constantly interrupted by phone calls. It is not easy to explain to allotment holders that if they stop gardening, they must give up their plot. For many, the garden is a refuge and a place to meet up with friends or family.
For her part, having grown up in the city, Dalila learnt everything she knows in the allotment gardens – from tending her tomatoes to growing her pumpkins, chillies and aubergines. She also loves to plant the finds she’s picked up at flea markets in her vegetable patch. When she was ill, her husband brought her vegetables from their garden to the hospital every day for her meals. In short, the garden saved her life.
